Maria Barbaro is a Melbourne based artist and illustrator. Maria’s limited edition linocut and mono prints are created with elegant fluid lines. Her knowledge of textiles and garment construction is evident, adding a subtle credibility to her fashion art work.
After graduating Maria began working as evening wear designer for Norma Tullo, one of Melbourne important designers of the time. Later once her children came along, Maria began to freelance, continuing to illustrate for a variety of fashion labels and is still freelancing to this day.
Taking up a totally different but immensely enjoyable direction, Maria found herself illustrating local marine life for Victoria Parks and Gardens. These can be seen on information plaques along the Great Ocean Road.
Maria also enjoys painting and began with pastels entering arts shows and collecting a few awards along the way. A realist with an eye for detail, acrylics on canvas has become her chosen painting medium for favourite subjects such as water and accidental still life.
More recently though, printmaking has become a passion bringing her full circle back to fashion. Using pattern and her love of line, Maria’s art work reflects the glamorous fashion icons and illustrators of the past.
Maria exhibits relief art and paintings regularly and her work can be found in both private and public collections.
